Maratona dles Dolomites

Do you want to take on a challenge? And at the same time enjoy breathtaking scenery? Then the Dolomites Marathon, or Maratona dles Dolomites – Enel Granfondo, is perfect for you.

It is hard not to fall in love with the Dolomites when you are there. You are surrounded by endless alpine meadows, stunning roads, and Europe’s most beautiful mountain peaks. During our last visit, our eighth time there, the magical views once again gave us goosebumps.

Route Maratona dles Dolomites – Enel Granfondo

The Dolomites Marathon takes you through the very best the Dolomites have to offer. The route begins with the famous Sella Ronda—considered by many to be the finest cycling loop in Europe—traversing the Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, and Passo Gardena.

You then repeat the first of these climbs before heading through a valley to reach the Passo Giau. This is a truly brutal climb and a classic feature of the Giro d’Italia whenever the peloton passes through the Dolomites. Finally, you conquer the Passo Valparola via the Passo Falzarego and ride up a short, steep ramp to the finish line. The Dolomites Marathon comprises 8 official climbs, covering 138 kilometers and 4,230 meters of elevation gain.

We can tell you from experience: the Maratona dles Dolomites Granfondo features a magnificent route and is superbly organized—including roads that are completely closed for traffic.

Program

Day 1: Dolomites Paradise

You arrived yesterday, so this is your first day at altitude—plus, you’re still recovering from the journey here. It’s the perfect excuse for a relatively easy ride and to enjoy all the beauty the Dolomites have to offer!

We’ll ride out of the valley before turning right towards Pederü. This road, with its gentle, false-flat incline winding through Alpine meadows, is a true paradise. Be sure to enjoy the coffee and cake at the mountain hut!

Total: 62 km and 950 m of elevation gain.

Day 2: Nicest loop in Europe

We’re cycling the Sella Ronda today! Four magnificent climbs in the Dolomites. Yes, this loop is also part of the Granfondo. But take my word for it: we’re riding it in reverse, which makes for a completely different experience.

We’ll ride to Corvara and start with the Passo Gardena—a steady, rhythmic climb. Next up is the Passo Sella; it’s the toughest of the lot, but also the most beautiful, and the descent is spectacular. The Passo Pordoi combines elements of the previous two: a shorter, steady climb. Afterward, you’re treated to a long, open descent—pure bliss! Finally, the Passo Campolongo serves as the icing on the cake, wrapping up the day with 67 km and 2,000 meters of elevation gain.

Day 3: Typical Dolomitesloop

Today’s itinerary features a loop over the Passo Valparola and Passo Campolongo. We descend to La Ila and then turn left. The road winds through small villages before the actual climb begins. The Dolomite peaks are unmissable—stunning! Once at the summit, we descend, and the valley leads us to Arabba for the Passo Campolongo.

We descend back to the hotel. You are acclimatized, and the hard work is done.

Total: 57 km and 1,600 m of elevation gain.

Day 4: Restday

Today, you decide on your own plan. For those who want to cycle: ride up and down the valley. Want a longer ride? Climb the Passo Gardena or Passo Campolongo from Corvara. Weren’t you here on Wednesday? Then the ride to Pederü is also a good option.
